Background of the Study
Traditional folktales in Eastern Nigeria serve as rich repositories of cultural heritage and moral instruction. These narratives often employ layered semantic elements—metaphors, allegories, and culturally loaded symbols—to convey profound meanings that transcend literal interpretation (Chinwe, 2023). This study evaluates the semantic depth of traditional folktales by analyzing selected narratives from Eastern Nigeria. It investigates how storytellers use language to embed complex cultural values, social norms, and historical narratives within seemingly simple stories. The research examines linguistic devices that contribute to semantic richness, such as repetition, symbolism, and figurative language. By delving into these narratives, the study aims to uncover the underlying themes and messages that continue to influence contemporary cultural identity and social behavior. The findings are expected to contribute to the preservation of oral traditions and enhance our understanding of the interplay between language, culture, and meaning in a dynamic society (Olu, 2024; Eze, 2025).

Statement of the Problem
Despite the recognized importance of traditional folktales in preserving cultural values, there is limited research on the semantic depth of these narratives in Eastern Nigeria. The complex layers of meaning embedded in these stories often go undocumented, which may lead to a loss of cultural heritage and misinterpretation of their underlying messages (Chinwe, 2023). Without systematic analysis, the rich semantic content of folktales is at risk of being overshadowed by modern influences, thereby undermining efforts to preserve indigenous knowledge and cultural identity (Olu, 2024; Eze, 2025).

Objectives of the Study

  • To analyze the semantic devices used in Eastern Nigerian folktales.

  • To evaluate the depth of cultural meaning in these narratives.

  • To propose strategies for preserving and transmitting semantic richness.

Research Questions

  • What semantic devices are prevalent in Eastern Nigerian folktales?

  • How do these devices contribute to cultural meaning?

  • What measures can enhance the preservation of semantic depth?

Significance of the Study
This study enriches our understanding of Nigerian cultural narratives by exploring the semantic depth of traditional folktales. The insights gained will support cultural preservation and educational initiatives, ensuring that the rich meanings embedded in these stories continue to inform contemporary society (Chinwe, 2023; Olu, 2024; Eze, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses solely on traditional folktales from Eastern Nigeria and does not include narratives from other regions or modern reinterpretations.

Definitions of Terms

  • Semantic Depth: The level of meaning embedded within a text.

  • Folktales: Traditional oral stories that convey cultural values.

  • Cultural Narratives: Stories that express the beliefs and practices of a community.
